First of all, Happy Opening Day to those who celebrate. This is going to be an awesome day of baseball that starts in just 8 hours (from the time of this article's release). While the Dodgers and the Cubs opened the season in Tokyo, the opening day in the US is always special.
The Brewers and the Yankees are going to be the teams that open the season at 3:05 PM EST. The Orioles follow 2 minutes later, and then we won’t see our next game until 1 hour later when the Red Sox play the Rangers.
But, speaking of the Red Sox, let’s take a look at them for the next 5 minutes.
I was able to work with
and co on 2025 MLB Predictions, and while answers for World Series varied, most of the amazing MLB writers said that the Dodgers were going to win the World Series, with only not including the Dodgers in a World Series possibility. and I, out of all the possibilities, had the same people making the World Series, but he said the Dodgers were going to win, while I said the Red Sox were going to win. That seems weird. You’re probably asking, Smayan, the Dodgers have literally built a superteam. Do you really think that if they get to the World Series (which is really obvious), that they won’t win it? Another question that you’re probably asking is, why the Red Sox?
The Yankees may have gotten Max Fried and Cody Bellinger, but nothing will make up for the loss of Juan Soto. Soto was one of the biggest reasons the Yankees made the World Series. Heck, maybe even the playoffs. Gerrit Cole is out for the 2025 season, and that’s a huge loss as well. Gleyber Torres? Gone. Anthony Rizzo? Gone.
The Rays are in rebuilding mode, even though they have some great players and prospects. The Rays, though, somehow always find themselves to be good in some way, so they’ll be interesting to see this season. One major disadvantage, though, is the stadium, especially because of the conditions in Tampa Bay.
asked me a wonderful question about the Rays for my Sports Summit Mailbag (Part 1).The Rays are going to be deeply affected by what happens at George M. Steinbrenner Field, and it’s only because they aren’t used to it at all as a home game. In the summer, Tampa’s climate is very humid, and while their high has never reached 100 degrees, it has gone as high as 99. It’s a very hard place to play outside in during the summer, so it’s going to be tough adjusting to it. It rains frequently during this time too, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see multiple rain delays or cancellations during the season.
I think it’s going to affect them quite a bit, and it shouldn’t be ignored. It’s super sad that the Rays aren’t even diverting to their new stadium, and focusing on rebuilding the Trop. At this point, the Rays are not in the correct state and time to make a playoff run, so it’s good that the Rays don’t have to suffer a playoff position from this, but no one wants their team to lose games.

On from the Rays, one of the biggest threats for the Red Sox for this whole World Series thing has to be Orioles, but even with the MLb being a 162-game season, a fast start is going to be very important. The Orioles are going to start the season without Gunnar Henderson, who’s heading to the IL. Things are going to take him a bit to get up to speed, and he’s going to have to do it during the regular season, when things matter.
Adley Rutschman is coming off of his worst season, and it wasn’t as bad as you think it was. It was worse.
There is still Colton Cowser, Cedric Mullins, and Tyler O’Neill, but most importantly, Jackson Holliday, who I think is going to be the Orioles breakout candidate this year.
Even if all goes well on the batting side, things are still a problem on the pitching side. The Orioles lost their ace in Corbin Burnes this year to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a 6-year-deal, and din’t really make a lot of moves until they came towards the end of the free agency period.
This is the Orioles starting rotation: Zach Eflin, Dean Kremer, Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano, and Cade Povich. Grayson Rodriguez was supposed to be one of their high-end arms this year, but he too will start the season on the IL.
For the Blue Jays, the 2024 season was a disaster, and the 2025 free agency was too (if you think about it, things could’ve gone a lot better). Heck, this season might be a catastrophe too. Last year, the Blue Jays were 74-88, and they sat in last place in a very competitive AL East.
The Blue Jays failed in acquiring a lot of players this offseason (Juan Soto, Roki Sasaki, etc), but they also were able to acquire Max Scherzer, Anthony Santander, and Andres Gimenez, to fix the rotation, hitting, and infield respectively.
Now there are a lot of reasons this team could thrive. For one, Bo and Vladdy are both playing for a contract, and the Blue Jays now have an actual rotation, compared to the disaster last year. Things can’t really get worse than last year.
But, I want to look specifically at the Red Sox. This division is going to be competitive, however you think about it. The teams are spectacular, and there’s not doubt that the Red Sox are going to struggle a little bit during the season on their journey to become champions.
The Red Sox have awesome pitching. Crochet, Houck, Buehler, Bello, and Sandoval are all amazing in their own way, and should be one of the top ranked rotations in the league! This combo can win against the Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays, and Rays any day, and if they’re not on their best game? Don’t fret, here’s the offense. Rafael Devers, Alex Bregman, and Jalen Duran, are just few of the studs that this team has.
The Red Sox have a very strong outfield with Jalen Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela, but Rafaela has been the weak spot and there’s a chance that Roman Anthony, baseball’s #1 prospect, makes his MLB debut this year.
Failiure also doesn’t seem like an option this year, because the 2026 offseason is set to be huge, and the Red Sox know that the Yankees can just get anyone they want. If they can prove that they’re a playoff team, they can maybe just maybe land the target that the Yankees are looking for. Maybe they can finally win the World Series, and bring back some love in Boston.
What’s going to be the real test, though, will be the Dodgers, in the World Series, if they make it to that point (which I predict them to do so). The Dodgers have spent a lot of money on their team the last 2 years, hoarding all the greats. Will they be able to get past Ohtani, Sasaki, Yamamoto, Snell, and Glasnow on the batting side? If they want to win the WS, at the trade deadline, they need to think as if they’re playing the Dodgers the next day, and target the players they need to win against him.
Against a team like the Dodgers, the Red Sox cannot play like the Yankees did in Game 5 of the World Series against LAD. The Red Sox need to eliminate all weaknesses possible when they play such a superteam.
This is going to be one of the best chances the Red Sox are ever going to get at a World Series. The Blue Jays could be in good contention next year and so could the Rays. The young guys are just going to get better and better for the Orioles, and the Yankees can literally woo anyone to come and play for them.
It all depends on the hunger.
Last year, the Dodgers and Shohei Ohtani were hungry to bring home a World Series, Hungry to finally get past the NLCS and the usual message that the Dodgers are playoff chokers. The 2004 Boston Red Sox were hungry to defeat the Yankees. They were down 3-0, but they still won the series.
So, I’ll leave you with this to ponder about. It’s not a question about “Will the Red Sox Win The World Series?” No, that doesn’t address anything.
Are the 2025 Boston Red Sox hungry for a World Series?
Excellent take. I’m optimistic and I’m not even cautious. Go Sox and play ball!
