The Arizona Cardinals released tight end Zach Ertz after he requested to be waived, Ertz's former teammate J.J. Watt reported Thursday.
The 33-year-old has 27 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown in seven games this season.
The Stanford product will be subject to waivers before he's permitted to sign with another team.
Ertz joined Arizona partway through the 2021 campaign. He spent the first eight years and six games of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles.
A reunion with the Eagles would match Ertz's desire to sign with a contender and give the team a veteran tight end while Dallas Goedert heals from a forearm injury that's sidelined him for the club's last two contests.
Ertz's request to be released comes amid a breakout year for Trey McBride. The 2022 second-round pick has established himself as the team's top tight end weapon with 521 yards and a touchdown on 48 receptions this season.
