2024 was the year of a lot of things.
It brought us the Olympics, it was a leap year, movies, the Dodgers finally won, etc.
But, it also brought us so many deaths. So many legendary sports stars and broadcasters… Gone. Heck, the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, died just yesterday at 100 years old.
So, because of this, I went on Twitter (I’m not calling it X), and I asked 2 questions.
Which athlete/broadcaster's death in 2024 made you super sad and why?
When you think of 2024, what sports player comes to mind first?
So, here’s what’s going to happen. We’re going to split this into 3 parts.
Dec. 30th: The People Answer The Questions.
Dec. 31st: I Answer The Questions and List The Deaths and Records.
Jan. 1st: The People Speak + Year’s Predictions.
Just because it's not my writing, doesn't mean it isn't interesting. Lots of people from around the globe, put effort and answered the questions. Let’s get into it.
Which athlete/broadcaster's death in 2024 made you super sad and why?
Andrew Marinaro said, “Pete Rose but fictional athlete is creed.”
Curious Sports Pulse Media said, “Pete Rose. Sad that his history with the MLB couldn't be reconciled.”
Ryan Parsa said, “Rickey Henderson.”
TD Nash said, “Bill Walton.”
Joe Kerr said, “I know it’s very recent, but I was bummed out to hear about Greg Gumbel. I grew up listening to him and always appreciated him. And it’s just a reminder of our own mortality and transience and our need to get right with God.”
Billsmania said, “Greg Gumbel his voice was legendary and perfect he was the perfect personality, and I grew up listening to him he was a good fit.”

“Rickey Henderson. Have a love hate with Rickey. In the 80s early 90s he would beat my Blue Jays single handedly at times..in 93 we said if we can't beat him, get him.... Rickey was a big factor in the Jays going back to back...as much as he was in denying us a chance for more. If you didn't get to see Rickey play ball, you missed out on one of the goats. Like hockey fans who missed Gretzky, or Basketball fans who never experienced Magic and Bird. Rickey was something else. Part of baseball magic died with him.” (This is my favorite one.)
Micki said, “Rickey Henderson really made me sad because I watched him when I was young. I saw him play the way he wanted to play and change the game.”

“2024 has been the year of Caitlin Clark. No other athlete has had the same media showcase. From the end of her college career to her meteoric rise to being the face of the WNBA as a rookie, smashing records in both the NCAA and WNBA along the way. Her fanfare also drew crowds and eyeballs to LPGA and PGA events, and caused broadcast scheduling adjustments just to get her on TV/Streams due to demands from the public.
Can't think of any other player in sports that had the year she had.”

“I’ll give you 2, they're tied together to make my point. Caitlin Clark & Angel Reese. 2 women who represented greatness and brought so much to women's b-ball (ratings and revenue) yet they represented one of the issues in this country's, subconscious racial rooting interest.”

“OU Softball 4-peat. What a great softball team . Kenzie Hansen, Tiare Jennings, Jayda Coleman, Kelly Maxwell, Alyssa Britto & Coach Patty Gasso. The hearts of the team ❤️.”
